Scott had been badgering me for ages (read: at least 2 years).

Bitcoin… Ethereum… Smart Contracts…

Meh.

I mean, I’m a nerd and love tech, but, for some odd (and somewhat unfortunate) reason, I ignored this growing area of R&D for too long.

Way too long.

Almost a decade after the first Bitcoin was mined, I finally decided to take a good look at what this whole “cryptocurrency” and “blockchain” was all about.

Surely, it was just hype.

So, yeah, no.

Not hype. It’s real.

I mean, I believe it’s real. Not just the Bitcoin/currency part, but the underlying blockchain technology that makes it all possible.

And by “real” I mean it has the potential to change the way we do business, manage identities and personal/private information, vote, and yes, of course, conduct financial transactions and manage wealth.

And it all started, for me, at least, with 20 bucks.

Yep, the rabbit hole was baited with a mere $20. Canadian dollars, too!

Tired of me putting off something he KNEW I’d dive into, like a crack dealer, Scott “hooked” me up with $20 in Bitcoin.

That was the start.

He told me to install the Jaxx wallet then send him my public Bitcoin address.

Seconds later I had $20 in my wallet. Like magic. No banks, no, confirmation emails. No nothing. Just, money in my new wallet.

Then I “shapeshifted” some Bitcoin into Ethereum and learned 2 things.

First, transactions aren’t free.

Second, this happens (nearly) instantly.

At that point I was more than intrigued. I was hooked.

(Dammit, Scott, you friggin crack dealer, *ahem*, cryptocurrency advocate!)

That was it for me. I was helpless.

Fast forward 3 weeks and I’ve:

  • invested a bit over $500 between Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Litecoin;
  • installed a Bitcoin full node;
  • purchased a cloud mining contract at Genesis Mining;
  • set up an account on a popular exchange and started lending;
  • created an Ethereum wallet on myetherwallet.com;
  • created a Monero wallet on mymonero.com;
  • re-purposed a few old computers to mine for Monero (XMR);
  • created this site.

So, here we are now.

Learning about this stuff together.

I truly believe in the possibilities of the overall blockchain concept and the potential for a reimagining of currency and representation of wealth.

I’m in this for the long haul.

That said, at this point it should be obvious that I barely have a clue about this stuff.

So, it shouldn’t need be said, but I’ll say it anyway: take everything I say with a ginormous grain of salt.
